AFRICA - TANZANIA: StreetNet International "TRAINING COURSE ON COLLECTIVE NEGOTIATIONS IN THE INFORMAL ECONOMY FOR TANZANIAN INFORMAL TRADERS OR VENDORS" by Sibailly Maximilien Douhouré
"The affiliate of StreetNet International in Tanzania (TUICO) and VIBINDO, an organization of economic operators in the informal sector in Tanzania, benefited from training courses on collective bargaining in the informal economy, organized from 21 to 25 February 2017 at the Msimbazi Centre in Dar Es Salam."
'Two innovations deserve to be reported for this training:
1.The courses and discussions were fully translated into Swahili by a local team of TUICO trainers and it enabled the active participation of the vendors. Swahili serves as official language in East African Community.
2. In practice, a discussion was held on 23 February in the conference room of the Municipality of Temeke with participants on their main concerns, namely the numerous taxes to pay, the high cost of taxes to pay, Organization of sales zones, hygiene and safety issues in sales zones.
The seminar was regularly attended by 27 participants, which included 10 women. Participants were mainly TUICO members from Dar Es Salaam markets (Buguruni, Kariakoo, Magomeni, Mchikichini, Mwenge, Ilala, Tazara and Tabata).
There were also two members of VIBINDO, the Director of Gender Issues at TUCTA, the Central Workers' Union and the TUICO organizing team.
Funded by the Solidarity Center, the seminar was facilitated by StreetNet Organizer Sibailly Maximilien Douhouré, assisted by TUICO organizing team.
Next step: TUICO should be able to organize the vendors in the zone of Temeke as quickly as possible and to enter into regular discussions with the Municipality of Temeke on their concerns.'
